Maura’s October 2019 Monthly Newsletter

Return to all

Hi, Everyone!

“I’m so glad that I live in a world where there are Octobers,” wrote L.M. Montgomery in Anne of Green Gables (incidentally, one of my favorite authors talking about my favorite month in one of my favorite books) — did I love October before I discovered Anne or did Anne’s love of the month influence my own feelings? It’s difficult to know, but I do know that despite my aversion to all things pumpkin spice latte-related, autumn — with its falling leaves and burnished colors, those first whiffs of chimney smoke and bonfires and the seeing the first knee-high boots and cozy sweaters — makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

It’s a bit of nostalgia that I get to feel every year — a sentimental look back on the summer, with its lazy days (even if those were just imagined) at the lake, the Vitamin D that beams into my body every time I raise my face to the (blistering) sun, the sipping rosé on my patio (but let’s be honest, I will do this in autumn, too)… No matter how welcome the summer is, in any year, as a respite from the dreary, rainy, grey winter, autumn in general, and October specifically, will always, always have my heart.

Speaking of nostalgia, you can capitalize on feelings of nostalgia in your marketing, and I highly recommend it. Nostalgia — whether for a beloved season, a childhood memory, or a favorite scent — is a powerful tool. Read more about how you can use nostalgia in your marketing here.

And now, here are a few things I’m finding interesting and looking forward to this month!

Podcast I’m listening to – I’ve become pretty addicted to The High Low Show, a weekly British pop culture and news podcast brought to you by Dolly Alderton & Pandora Sykes. Is it real estate related? Nope. So why am I telling you about it? Well, my books-I-must-read list has never grown faster — I cannot listen without having a pen and paper nearby to write down articles and books that I need to google later, and I’m learning a ton. Because sometimes we need to step out of our real estate bubble and take a breather.

TV show I can’t wait to watch this month – To me, there’s nothing better on TV in October than the 1966 classic, It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. Let’s all remember to set those DVRs!

Post I’m proud of this month — As you may have read above, I’ve been setting monthly goals for myself, which started in July and blossomed into August…one of which is writing more. Writing is an outlet I enjoy, and I’ve vowed to do it more for self-care reasons and to give myself a little more “me time.” I wrote it for me. But also for you. If you choose to read it: “No One is Going to Read This Blog Post.”

Concept I’m pondering – There’s been a lot of buzz about the changes Instagram is testing in seven+ countries right now, and it got me thinking: how much do we like our likes on social media? Read more and contribute to the conversation here.
